A Kid’s Guide to Getting Braces!
Personally, I think braces are awesome! Braces are a very interesting thing. They help us take our smile and make it “perfect”. I am glad that I got them as early as I could so that I can be done with them sooner than later. This was what my experience was getting them, how they feel, what not to eat, and how to take care of them. So without further ado, let’s get started!
I’m going to be honest, going to the Orthodontist’s that day was so nerve-racking! I had no idea what to expect. Of course I had asked my friends that had braces how it felt getting them on and they said: “It doesn’t really hurt getting them on but, a couple of weeks later they really hurt.” Great. I was almost shaking but then remembered that after them, I would have a perfect smile. Then… they called my name.
I went to the back with the assistant, she put me in a chair, and pulled it all the way back. About a week before I had gotten these metal things on my very back molars so, they didn’t have to go all the way in the back when putting on the braces themselves. Score! I’d also taken an impression (which was super easy to take) the last appointment.
I nervously asked all these questions and one of them was: “I watched a bunch of videos on how they put on braces. Will you have to go bracket by bracket?” I think I literally smiled ear to ear when I heard the answer. Apparently, at my Orthodontist’s office all they do is put the brackets on your mouth mold! You put it in your mouth and… Boom! Brackets on all your teeth at the same time!
We did this, put the wire on and that was it! I was so happy because it didn’t hurt one bit. I was done in 45 minutes.
What not to eat:
After getting them on, they gave me a whole book on things you shouldn’t eat. Some of the things are chewy candies, popcorn, gummies, and gum. Especially gum! I was super sad when I found out I couldn’t chew on gum anymore but, once I heard why I wouldn’t dare too! When you chew on gum it bends your wire in a wiggly shape and it moves your teeth to that shape!! If you or anyone you know has braces please, don’t eat or chew any of these things.
How to take care of them:
They recommend brushing at the least twice a day. I recommend brushing after every meal! It just makes sure you keep them clean, make sure there’s nothing stuck in them, and having fresh breath. Even at school, they should give you a travel toothbrush and toothpaste so you always have one on the go. Even if they don’t, be prepared. Bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, wax, lip balm, and elastics (if needed.)
How they feel:
They feel great! Honestly I thought it would hurt but, they don’t hurt at all. They haven’t hurt since I’ve gotten them which was almost 2 months ago. I’m super lucky that they haven’t hurt but, I’m sure I’ll get my share of tooth aches! If you have braces, it’s perfectly normal for your teeth to feel sore or loose. Think about, they’re moving into a perfect line so, I think it’s worth it. I need them for 2 years. (If you were wondering.)
So, that was my journey (so far) with braces!
Have you ever had braces, got any tips?
Let me know, ciao for now!
